Sonia Gandhi visits Andhra and Andaman Islands

On her visit to Andhra Pradesh she interacted with women NGO's working for the welfare of women and their empowerment; She congratulated the women of Andhra for their role in making themsleves empowered and said they led an example to the world for their achievments in this regards:

During her visit to Andhra Pradesh on 27 May 2009 Sonia Gandhi,chief of ruling Congress party laid the foundation stone of a new Indian Institute of Technology or IIT at Kandi village of Andhra Pradesh on Friday.IIT Medak campus to provide early relief to the students attending classes in a temporary campus located on the premises of the Ordnance Factory Medak.
UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has said that the Congress party has fulfilled its promises and brought change in the lives of common man during the past 5 years. Addressing a public meeting at Kothagudem in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh, she said that the congress party is committed to provide equal opportunities for facilities such as education and health for all sections of society. The AICC President said it would be difficult to achieve equality among different sections without providing tribals their due rights over forests.
Highlighting the State Government's welfare schemes like Jalyagnam, Indiramma housing for poor and Arogyasri Health Insurance Scheme, she said that Rajiv Sagar and Indira Sagar irrigation projects would bring 4 lakh acres under irrigation in the Khammam district alone when completed. Stating that 2.25 lakh farmers in the state have been benefited with the waiver of crop loans. She also hailed the self reliance achieved by the Women self help groups in the state.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has announced a slew of development programmes for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands including a plan to make it a tourism hub.Addressing a public meeting in Port Blair on Friday, Gandhi said "Rajiv Gandhi had envisioned the islands as a big hub of the tourism industry."Speaking on job opportunities she said that employment would also be generated for the local people with the Centre promoting the tuna fish industry in the islands.


It would be promoted under the Tuna Fishing Action Plan of the Government of India, she added.A medical college would also be established while engineering classes could be taken up at the existing polytechnic institute here, she said.For the improvement of sea transport, new ships would be bought for plying on inter-island routes and between Chennai and Port Blair and Kolkata and Port Blair, she said.For farmers who lost their land in the 2004 tsunami, Gandhi said, the Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Foundation would provide them land and cattle.

Stating that the islands were peaceful and a "mini India", she cautioned the people against disruptive forces.Gandhi also unveiled a statue of late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and inaugurated the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex.

Shahbaz no more Punjab CM

2009-02-25 12:00:45 - Pakistan Punjab CM is dislodged from his prize post by three member judge bench of SC,the judgment two lines today made Sharif brothers' electoral eligibility case by declaring them ineligible for contesting elections in its two-line short order announced here.Shahbaz Sharif has hurriedly called a parliamentary party meeting of ML-N and all the members have been asked to make their presence in the meeting mandatory, while ML-N was seen making last ditch efforts for wooing the ML-Q on its side.

Supreme Court has disposed off Sharif brothers' electoral eligibility case by declaring them ineligible for contesting elections in its two-line short order announced here.

Shahbaz Sharif under this verdict has lost his seat in the provincial assembly and being no longer member of the Punjab House, he is no more Punjab chief minister, as SC has annulled the earlier notification about
his being chief minister.

SC three-member Bench headed by Justice Musa K. Laghari for the last eight months, in which, the Attorney General of Pakistan, Latif Khosa giving his arguments said that Punjab chief secretary and speaker were not the party in the case. Attorney General said that all the judges have taken oaths under the constitution and talking about the oath of the interim constitution was irrelevant.

Sharif brothers' lawyer, Akram Sheikh told media that the decision was as expected, as the government was giving dictation to the judges. He said that Sharif brothers were declared ineligible on the orders of President Zardari. He said that the judges would be made accountable on the Day of Judgement. Akram Shiekh said that now it was up to the people to decide if the verdict was on merit.

ML-N workers in sizable number were present on the occasion of the announcement of verdict raising slogans in favour of long march and Sharif brothers. Security arrangement remain tightened in the capital city here.
After Supreme Court's verdict of declarating Sharif brothers ineligible, Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) witnessed bearish trend on Wednesday as benchmark 100-Index shed more than 200 points to plunged down to below 5800 points.Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Pervez Rashid has said that Mian Nawaz Sharif was already aware of the Supreme Court's verdict.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Pervez said the government had offered Nawaz that if he recognised PCO judiciary, he would be declared eligible for contesting polls and Punjab government would continue, but the PML (N) rejected the offer.He said there would be no comprise over core issues of national concern and the party would continue its struggle for democracy.Media Geo news reports

Congress President Sonia Gandhi appointed Jayadev Jena as the secretary of the committee his appointment comes after the AICC restructuring last week in which several state in-charges were reshuffled and former Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad was brought in as General Secretary.Jena, the former PCC president of Orissa, was removed from his post last month in the restructured Orissa Congress.

Gujarat which has been able to pocket the most prstigeous auto projects with Tatas has added feather to Chief Minister Narendra Modi today reacted sharply to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's charge that while the state government doled out incentives worth crores of rupees to Tata's Nano car project it neglected diamond workers and accused Congress of trying to undermine the car project."They will not succeed in their effort. Congressmen envy the progress in Gujarat and that is why they are trying to puncture the Nano car project," Modi said at a public meeting in Amreli.

"Tata's Nano project reflects the progress made by Gujarat," Modi said, referring to the remarks made by Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to the city without naming him.

Rahul had accused the BJP government in the state of doling out incentives worth crores of rupees for Nano project but they do not have a single penny to give to poor diamond workers.

Modi alleged the UPA government at the Centre has ignored the plight of diamond workers and claimed suicides of diamond workers is going to change the government at the Centre in coming elections.
